The Big Care Debate

Thinking about becoming a Symponia Member?

Symponia - The Big Care Debate - Summary

On the positive side, we applaud any change, the more radical the better, but what is important is what pans out in the longer term. Will Andy Burnham really go down in our history books as the Member of Parliament who changed the lives of our elderly and vulnerable citizens or be remembered as just a pawn in an over elaborate chess game played by a possibly outgoing Government?

If all goes to their current plan and Labour do retain power after next years’ General Election, the new legislation won’t be phased in until 2014 at the earliest. This means an awfully long wait for the people either in care now or those new 400,000 who will face the need for care sometime before 2014. Sadly, many won’t see the “promised land” date arrive.

What Happens in the Meantime?

Sadly, nothing, the current legislation will continue to be implemented and followed for anyone needing care until the rules are changed.

The one certain thing is, that people paying their own care bills should always seek the advice of a specialist financial adviser at the earliest opportunity.

Money doesn’t have to drain away and appropriate steps can be put in place, which will mean that if you are one of the many families who can’t wait until 2014 (or longer) you can at least gain the peace of mind and reassurance that you have done your best to navigate the current system and ensure that there is sufficient money to meet the care fees indefinitely.
