Our services to older people are the same as they are to any client. However, there are legal rules that apply only to older people so it has become very much a legal specialism. Traditionally work with older people includes planning in the event that you may not always be able to manage independently, and you may want to appoint somebody you trust to help you. Legal Services to older people invariably includes making Wills and administering estates after death as well.

Because Turpin and Miller are a social welfare firm we offer a comprehensive service with an emphasis on securing appropriate care during your life-time and also ensuring you have not been charged for care which should be provided free of charge.

Therefore our work with older clients goes beyond planning and deals very much with the present which for some older people and their carers can be a very distressing time.

The services we provide to elderly clients are:

• Legal protection from physical, emotional or financial abuse
• Checking care home contracts and charges
• Requesting community care services
• Challenging decisions of Social Services and NHS
• Appointing some one to help with future decision-making (power of attorney)
• Applying to the court to appoint someone to make decisions (Receivership/deputyship)
• Will making service
• Estate Administration

We also have a partnership with independent financial advisers (Janet Davies and the team at Warwick Butchart Associates Limited) who specialise in older people and care home fees planning.

Cathy graduated in English from Oxford University, qualified as a solicitor at the College of Law in Chancery Lane and subsequently practised as a commercial lawyer in London.

She then took a break from the profession to bring up her children during which time she became involved with a not for profit advice agency, Oxfordshire Community Care Rights.

She has been advising on a wide variety of matters relating to Community Care law since April 2003 and now works as a Consultant Solicitor with the Community Care team at Turpin & Miller.
